The Douglas County Taxpayers Coalition (DCTC) would like to thank the voters of Douglas County for participating in the electoral process. The defeat of the SPLOST tax sends a message to public officials that the voters are concerned about how our tax dollars are being spent.

James Bell, a leader of DCTC, said the coalition worked hard to get accurate information out to the public so they could make a rational decision about the need for the tax and the jail.

“We spent $24 on 2 signs that were seen by thousands of citizens,” Bell said. “This was truly a grassroots effort. Without our involvement many voters would not have even known the tax was on the ballot”.

For five weeks in a row, DCTC volunteers spent Friday after noon standing on street corners with signs warning the public of the tax vote.

Bell said DCTC will be more involved in tax issues in the county and will serve as a watch-dog over our tax dollars.

“Our biggest concern is how county officials conducted themselves during this debate,” said Bell. “They tried to confuse the voter and resorted to misinformation and questionable tactics that, in the end, undermined their own efforts”.

Over the next few weeks, DCTC plans to address alternatives that can fix future jail crowding issues without collecting and spending more tax dollars.

“We believe there are less costly solutions to the issues the county may face. We want our elected officials to open their minds and look at other counties who are fixing problems without placing the burden on taxpayers”, said Bell.
